Lloyd Ralph Scott
|
We placed a flight of two jugs on each corner of the bombers. As we approached the area of the enemy bases so did the 109's. They attacked us in flights of four, from all directions. As they came in we turned head on at them. We followed this procedure several times and they broke away each time.

Charles B. Screws
|
He was downed by enemy ground fire January 29, 1944, evaded to Spain with outstanding help by the French nderground, returning to 1.is group May 1944. He was awarded the Air Medal and Purple Heart.

John C. Seal

Milton A. Seale
|
He was tail-end Charlie in his flight when he went over and after 88 missions and many pilot losses. he was a flight commander when he was sent home.

Fred A. Selle
|
In October, 1944, he joined the newly formed 508 FG, 7 AF, and after checking out in P-47 's flew coastal patrol with that group in the Hawaiian Islands. In July, 1945, he was assigned to the 318 FG, 8AF, flying
P-47N's. As the war was coming to an end he was flying missions over Japan and on August 9, 1945, while on a diversionary fighter sweep witnessed the atomic bombing of Nagasaki.

Thomas Edward Seuss
|
Mr. Seuss joined the Army the day after Pearl Harbor, became a fighter pilot, flew 99 combat missions in a P-47 in Europe, and landed a glider filled with paratroopers behind enemy lines during the crossing of the Rhine River, for which he was awarded the Air Medal for spearheading an invasion.

Robert D. Sharp
|
Though not interested in airplanes as a youth, Bob finally discovered the joy of flying when he strapped into the cockpit of the "Jug" at Harding Field, Louisiana. This joy continued through P-51's, F-80's, T-33's, and the F-86. The "old gosport" was hung up in 1956. He is presently a Lt. Col. in the AF Retired Reserve.

Richard P. Shaw
|
The 413th was equipped with the P-47N and was double strength in pilots because of the long range escort missions it was expected to fly in the air war against Japan.
The group went overseas in April 1945 and set up operations on Ie Shima (next to Okinawa) in May. First missions were flown in June 1945 and missions of five and six hours duration were considered normal.

Miles R. Shipley
|
First combat was in Italy in September, 1944, with the 523 Squadron, 27th group of the 12th Air Force, flying P-47 Interdiction Missions in the Poe Valley and Brenner Pass. Near Christmas 1944 the group flew en masse to St. Diziek, France for the "big shove" on the Mosselle Pocket with the 12th Tactical Air Force. The 27th was the first to locate East of the Rhine River at Sandloffen, Germany.

Robert E. Shumaker
|
Moved to Pittsburgh, Penn., 1927 and graduated from Langley flight School and attended the University of Pittsburgh. Always being the lucky type his World War Two draft number was the SECOND one pulled out of the old fish bowl and three weeks later was stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky where he soon learned that there were better ways to fight the war than being strapped in a Sherman Tank.
