Has anyone heard that after WW2 the P-47's based at Millville Army Airfield were discarded in Union Lake near Millville NJ?

In memoriam, my dad died in November, 2002.
Flight instructor for P-47s in Richmond, VA.
Flew out of Tinean in the Pacific late in the war.
Was there when Enola Gay was practicing.
Crashed off end of a cliff runway when engine quit.
Dropped his ordinance on runway, went over the cliff, and broke his back and legs. Fellow South Carolinian pulled him from the ocean and saved his life! Met Dr. Cary Middlecoff (pro golfer) in Augusta VA hospital who encouraged him to continue with golf when he got completely well. He said the Mustang was great, but if you wanted to come home you'd better strap on a P-47 !!

Dad worked on P-47s; ordnanceman (msg id: 2091)
My dad, Wayne B. Willis, was an ordnanceman with a P-47 Squadron which followed Patton to Germany, and I remember from his copy of the unit diary he had that the squadron (or maybe the Group?) was at Reims and spent time at a Luftwaffe field (probably inGermany) which had been a Me 262 field -- lots of neat photos of the jets that I drooled over when I was a kid. Dad died in '82 and we'd been estranged for over ten years by that time, and I never was able to get specifics from him and am trying to learn which squadron and Group he was with. Any help will be appreciated. Meanwhile, I'm going to enjoy this site a lot. Love it.

I have come across, in my grandmothers posessions, a book named "Cimarron Chief" class of 44-c. The book introduces and tellsl about a man called they called "Toughy". It tells his tails as well as lists the Administration along with their photos, Flying Officers along with their photos, Cadets and Instructors along with their photos, Flying Officers along with their photos. My grampa was Edward J. Wilk. He flew P-47s, was shot down over France, and was a POW before getting home to the States. My Uncle "Elmo" was in the 411th Fighter Squadron, 373rd Fighter Group. He died in his aircraft in Belgium.SN 42-26688.

My dad, George H. Veldboon was a P-47 pilot who downed 12 ME-109s during WWII. He flew 111 combat missions over Germany and never thought flying commercially was ever as exciting. He retired from Frontier Airlines in 1977 and passed away in Denver, CO in 1980.
