2nd Lt. James Floyd Bartee Jr. (msg id: 2929)
2nd Lt. James Floyd Bartee Jr. was with the 315th Fighter Squadron, 324th Bomber Group.
Originally flew as co-pilot in the C47 "Gooney Bird" transport dropping gliders at night, was involved in the move against Wesel, Germany, but have no further specifics on that. He was then transferred to Stuttgart, Germany where he got his P47 Thunderbolt. Have no info on any missions, trying to find something from somebody. Have his letters home with him writinging about what a great ship the P47 Fighter is, great handling, easy to land, and much safer than the C47.

P47 Horizontal Helen (msg id: 2921)
I have a photo of this aircraft showing after crashing on the runway. All four blade of the prop are bent and it is surrounded by American ground crew. I believe the picture was taken at Station 483
Barkston Heath, Lincolnshire, England. The base was used by the 61st Troop Carrier Group.

Came across a pic of my Dad's plane w/ swastika and "Don't Fraternize" painted on. Dad was born in 1923 & never pilot until Army taught him. Graduated Univ of Ala. He always said that when he enlisted, the war was almost over--so he flew recon taking pics. Does the swastika mean he destroyed a Nazi plane himself? Or does it mean something else?

I wanted to let everyone know that I'm now working on my second P-47 book, this one for Metro Books' "Combat Missions" series. It will rely heavily on first person accounts and will include about 180 photos.
Right now I am looking for accounts of pre-mission briefs, ground crews prepping the airplanes for a mission and combat missions in any theater from December 42 through August 45.
