Double Ace (msg id: 2066)
My dad, George H. Veldboon was a P-47 pilot who downed 12 ME-109s during WWII. He flew 111 combat missions over Germany and never thought flying commercially was ever as exciting. He retired from Frontier Airlines in 1977 and passed away in Denver, CO in 1980.

Proud son of James H. Simpson (msg id: 2064)
My dad died September of 1995. Being a P-47 pilot during the war defined who he was the rest of his life. Thank you Dad for your service. I've heard most of your stories before but reading about the one in your biography made me miss you that much more. You are still missed and thought of often.

Hanscom AFB 1940's (msg id: 2057)
Bedford Airport is what we called Hanscom when I was a kid growing up near the approach end of one of the runways. Hanscom was used for training, and lots of Jugs flew in and out. They cut the tops off all the trees approaching the runways so any low-flying a/c wouldn't clip them. We stood on a hill overlooking the runway (using a rock cairn we built. The guys used to see us there and tip their wings at us...Some guys in B-17's waved from the nose turrets as we waved tee shirts at them. The T-6 Texan was a constant droning thing then over there....also when we were weeding our cornfields, tinsel would drift down into our fields...They were "jamming" radars I guess. I have lots of wonderful memories of you wonderful guys from the 1940's at Hanscom. Dick Brooks (now) in Phillips Maine

Thorton J. Daniel, 79th FG 85th FS, Italy (msg id: 2055)
Hi Mike,
Here are some books on the 79th you might enjoy:
A Hostile Sky - The Mediterranean Airwar of the 79th Fighter Group, by Don Woerpel, and The 79th Fighter Group Over Tunisia, Sicily, and Italy in World War II, also by Woerpel.
The real gem though is the group's official unit history titled The Falcon. It was published in 1946 and has tons of photos including pilot and ground crew portraits. Ask your friend TJ if he has ever seen it. If not I might be able to help you locate a copy.
Best Regards,
Bob

Thornton Jackson Daniel (TJ) 79th FS Italy (msg id: 2054)
TJ (or Dan) is now 87 years old living in Napa, CA. He is my mother in law's boyfriend in an assisted living home. He has a few photos of a 20mm hole in the wing of his P47. The more we talk, the more he remembers, and we would love to hear from anyone who remembers him or whose relatives flew with the 79th FS. Any books or history of the 79th FS out there for purchase? Thanks.

I meant "squadron" not "wing" in my last entry. I believe they were nicknamed 'Mogin's Maulers' or something like that.

1LT Robert Vincent McCormick (msg id: 2051)
My grandfather flew 56 combat missions in his P-47 in WWII. He was with the 379th Fighter Wing, 362 Fighter Group. He only recently passed away, but I only met him a handful of times and know very little about his life. I'm hoping to find anyone who may have served with him or anyone who may have info on his service. Please contact me if you can help. Thank you. By the way, I altered my email to avoid spammers. Please replace "(at)" with the appropriate @.

318th FG at Saipan (msg id: 2049)
I'm researching the 318th FG at Saipan for a naval magazine. I'd welcome contact with any vets who launched from the carriers Natoma Bay or Manila Bay--especially how the catapult operation worked, since Jugs didn't have cat attachments.
Incidentally, The History Channel's "Dogfights" series WILL have a P-47 segment next season--by popular demand!
