My dad flew with the Wolfpack (56th) in the ETO. Several P47 books have a picture of him riding his unicycle "Boobytrap". The P47 in the background of that photo is LM-A flown by Al Knaffles.
Thanks for the wonderful job you are doing keeping WWII and the P47 memories alive.

How do I validate whether my friend was a P-47 pilot? (msg id: 2233)
My friend, Henry Meronek, died Dec. 6, 2009. He said he was a P-47 pilot in the 9th Air Force in Europe during WW2. A memorial service for him is on Jan. 10, and will include military honors conducted by local area Honor Guard. Many of us thought his stories about being shot down over the English Channel, and being wounded with flack, and tearing up his hip joint in a parachute jump may have been streachers that he began to tell way back, and then figured he had to stick to them once he had made himself a reputation by telling them. Can anyone reveal how to verify if he really did fly the P-47? Henry was born in Custer, Wisconsin, on 3/30/1917, and lived for many years in Elgin, IL, where he worked as a cement contractor.

2nd Lt. Thomas J. Ellwanger (msg id: 2232)
Looking for anything anyone can tell me about my uncle, Thomas J. Ellwanger. In December 1944 he was with the 509th Fighter Squadron, 405th Fighter Group, of the Ninth Air Force, stationed at "USAAF Site A-64," apparently in France. He flew a P-47D22RE. On 12/12/44, he was shot down by enemy aircraft during a dive bombing mission over railroad marshalling yards at Kaiserlauten, Germany, near Frankfurt. Attached to the missing aircrew report is a statement by Captain Paul H. Massey, who was leading the mission. I would also be interested in hearing anything about Capt. Massey.

colors for 311th Ftr sqd "Boars head" emblem (msg id: 2230)

The Jug (msg id: 2229)
My father, Donald T. O'Connor flew the P-47 Thunderbolt, also known as "The Jug," in 1945 and 46 in Europe as a member of thr 362nd squadron.
He passed away three years ago on November 28, 2006.
He had a long military career as a pilot and retired as a Lieutenent Col after flying super-sonic fighters. Yet, it was "The Jug" and his experiences flying with the 362nd as a young airmen in europe during WWII that he spoke most fondly. It was by far his favorite aircraft, and a time in his life when he felt most alive.
Now that he has passed, I have some of his ashes (each of his seven children share them) and would like to get an actual commemerative jug which was made several years ago in honor of the P-47 in which to use as his final resting place.
If anyone has information on how to obtain one, I would greatly appreciate it.

Captain Everett G. King (msg id: 2227)
My father, Colonel Edwin V. King and his twin brother Captain Everett G. King both flew P-47's during D-day and through the summer of 1944.
On August 15, 1944 at noon, in south-western part of France, near Rambouillet, an intense air battle between a squadron of American fighter-bombers P47 and Luftwaffe fighter Focke Wulf 190 took place and wittness by the entir village of Clairefontaine. During this battle, four German planes are shot down, but three American aircraft are shot down. One of them crashed near Clairefontaine, his pilot, Captain Squadron Everett G. King, although he managed to eject from his plane, was killed at ground. A stele in the Place de la Mairie at Clairefontaine perpetuates the memory of this event.

information on my father p-47 captain WW11 (msg id: 2223)
I am trying to get any information I can regarding my fathers service in the war. He was a Captain Richard William Long, he flew P 47 's in the Italian and N africa theaters. think he joined up in the in Victoria Texas , and returned to Tucson or Phoenix. I know he ended up in Long Beach. He left service about the time President Roosevelt died.
I don't have much more information. He committed suicide in 1963, ( Post traumatic stress syndrome) I know he had about 100 + successful missions, and low flying missions in Italy.

George Richard Gray, 1920-2009 (msg id: 2219)
To those who flew with him you probably knew him as George or Rich. He was in the Ninth Air force, 366th fighter group and spent a lot of his time flying out of field Y-29 in Belgium. His favorite aricraft was A6Q, fondly referred to as "Quennie". The rest of his life was shaped by his experience "over there" and it helped him to teach his sons many lifelong lessons. He very much enjoyed getting to see many of you again at all of the reunions he attended. He had to stop going those reunions to care for his wife Anne who survives him. Dad passed quietly in his sleep on August 21st. Lieutenant Colonel Gray was put to rest with a full Air Force honor guard at the Los Gatos Memorial Park in California. He will be missed by all of us.

My uncle Bill, assigned to the 366th FG, 391st FS in WWII was KIA on D-Day in Normandy. He is buried at the very spot where his P-47 went down north of St. Lo, which I have visited. I plan to take my mother (Bill's younger sister by 11 years and only immediate family member living) to the site and would like to connect with anyone who may have known him. Born in Benson, MN, he wasn't quite 24 when he died, was married just 4 months and had a degree in Journalism. Unfortunately we know little of his short time in the military and as a P-47 pilot. I would like to know if my Uncle (Capt.Jack Yarger) had a name or several on his ship a P-47 D of which he has flown in WWII. Can you tell me as I would like to know or see his plane that he flew. I would appreciate it very much. I was deaf and could not hear at the age of 22 months. I wanted to be a pilot like my Uncle Jack. Obviously it never happened.

John J. Reynolds
John J. Reynolds, 84, of Narvon died Sunday, April 26, 2009 at Ephrata Community Hospital. He was married to Margaret E. (Heath) Reynolds. They would have celebrated their 63rd anniversary in June.
Born in Chester, PA, he was the son of the late Thomas and Mae (Morris) Reynolds.
John was a steam turbine engineer for Westinghouse for over 43 years. He was an active member of Christian Fellowship Church, New Holland.
He served in the Army Air Corps as a P47 Thunderbolt pilot during World War II and as an Anti-Aircraft Commander with the Army during the Korean War.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children: John H. Reynolds, Seattle, WA; Brian C. Reynolds, Glen Mills; and June M. Koehler, Chester Springs; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
His funeral will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2009 (TODAY) at 7:30 PM at Christian Fellowship Church, 758 Spruce Rd., New Holland. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 PM. Burial will be on Wednesday at 2:30 PM at St. Dennis Cemetery, Havertown. The Groff-High Funeral Home, New Holland is in charge of arrangements.
