I am truly honored to be able to ask a question in this website. Does anyone know anything about the Pre-heater which went under the shell near the engine, to help warm up the p47 Thunderbolt faster for take off? My father worked on that project, and I sure would like to speak with someone who knows anything about it, anything at all. Thank you, and God bless you all. Dave Weinstein Daavmaar@msn.com

I am a member of the P-47 pilots association. I flew 113 combat missions in Italy 1944-45, with the 57th Fighter Group, 64th Fighter Squadron. I would like to hear from any who graduated in class 44-C, Craig Field, Selma AL. Although most of the responses on this page are from those who flew out of England, it still brings back fond memoiries of a great airlpane and, a greater group of guys who flew and serviced them!

Great! My dad flew P-47s out of Steeple Morton during world war two. He changed aircrft to the P-51, but the P-47 was his real love. He would love to hear from anyone stationed there, expecially those in the Angels squadron. E-mail me and I will forward it.

I have been a big Jug fan since I was a boy during WW2. I watched Bob Johnson of the 56thFG fly over my house in 1944 and one of my fondest memories is of meeting Francis Gabreski and his autographed book is a prized possession of mine. Long live the memory of of one of the greatest airplanes ever.

On May 13, 2001 at 10:00 PM EST The History Channel in the U.S. plans to air the film Thunderbolts, Conquest of the Reich. The footage in this film was shot from March 1- May 15, 1945 and was shot on color 16mm and 35mm Kodachrome film stock. The USAAF 4th Combat Camera Unit shot this film. The film was made on the orders of General Hap Arnold. The 365th and 362nd Fighter Groups appear mostly in the film but other groups also appear. The film covers the last 2 months of the war in Europe as seen by the Thunderbolt pilots. Four pilots who appeared in the original film were interviewed for this History Channel presentation to comment on the action taking place. The film is dedicated to all the Thunderbolt pilots who flew in Europe during the Second World War. All the footage in this film is presented in its original color form and has not been colorized. This film was not released by the USAAF after the war, now for the first time see the Thunderbolts in action over Germany in COLOR.

On april 29, 1944, flak and fighter damage forced us to ditch in the North Sea about 30 miles off Great Yarmouth. A P-47 pilot (there may have been two) flew with us until we hit the water and then radioed our position to Air/Sea Rescue. Since our generators were out, our radio was useless, so that pilot (or pilots) saved the lives of the seven of us who survived the ditching. I'd like very much to learn the name or names of the pilot(s), so if this association can help, I'd appreciate it very much.

I am in possession of a U.S. One Dollar Bill Silver Certificate signed by at least 16 members of the Short Snorters. The back of the bill is dated 11/10/1942. It also has printed the initials H.W.E. Some names are legible, some are hard to read due to the age of the bill. Do names like Pete Miller, John Stout Jr., or Roger S. Fuller sound familiar? Please e-mail me if you know anything about this bill.

I'm writing a Smithsonian Press book about the aviation Medal of Honor recipients and would welcome contact with any 346th FS and/or 350th FG personnel who can help with information on Lt. Raymond Knight. I wish to go into more detail than is provided in his MOH citation and any leads or hard info is welcome.
